Mechanism of Action of Oral Contraceptive Pills
Females willing to prevent conception are administered with small doses of progesterone or progesterone-estrogen combinations. These pills are consumed daily for 21 days, starting from preferably first five days of menstrual cycle. They act as contraceptive by doing the following:
- Inhibit ovulation
- Thicken the cervical mucus to prevent entry of sperms
- Delay transport of sperms or egg
- Inhibit implantation of embryo in the uterus
