Inheritance of hundreds of characteristics such as colour blindness, hemophilia, polydactyly, attached earlobes and tongue rolling, have been studied generation after generation in particular families of human beings. In order to understand the pattern of inheritance, a family tree or chart made of symbols and lines that represent a person’s genetic family history is used. This chart is known as pedigree chart.
So we can say that the pedigree chart is a visual tool for documenting the biological relationship in families and determine the mode of inheritance (dominant, recessive, etc.) of genetic diseases. In pedigree chart, symbols represent people and lines represent genetic relationships.
